John Spratt said “Our country, the United States of America, may be the worlds largest economy and the worlds only superpower, but we stretch ourselves dangerously thin by taking on commitments like Iraq with only a motley band of allies to share the burden.”

There had been many empires before the USA became a superpower. There was the Greek Empire. There was the Roman Empire. There was the British Empire and many others before.  There can never be two empires or superpowers at the same time. Many factors account for any nation to become an empire or a superpower.

According to Lyman Miller, “the basic components of superpower stature may be measured along four axes of power: Military, economic, political and cultural”. Among all those factors, the one that contributes to the US status of a supper power has been the confines of democracy and the philosophy of democratic principles, which defines what America is today.

The USA draws its respect from other parts of the world through its democratic principles and adherence. One of the areas where democracy in the USA has been measured has been by how it has been conducting its elections and how it has been respecting its Constitution. For decades, the USA had proved to the entire world how free and fair elections would be conducted and how respecting the Constitution led to good governance.

Although not to perfection, the US election had been the most preferred mode of electing moderate individuals to leadership positions by many other nations worldwide.  By respecting its Constitution, the USA shined brightest among all other nations in the world and therefore drew respect from all corners; nevertheless, in 2016, when for the first time in US history, an American was elected without submission of tax returns, marking the beginning of the decline of the US superpower status. 

The omission of the submission of Donald Trump’s tax returns as a requirement in US elections diluted the strength, meaning, and value of democracy in the US.  The failure to enforce the tax returns provision as a requirement in the electoral process at the 2016  US presidential elections paved the way for the Capitol Hill attack in January 2020.

From 2016, the US Constitution has continued to grow weak day by day and year by year. This weakening of the US Constitution would disable the US judiciary from prosecuting certain obvious criminal cases relating to Donald Trump. 

Any external force can never destroy empires and/or superpowers. A superpower or an empire would only destroy itself (from within).

This being the case, the re-election of Donald Trump as president of the USA in 2024  may mark the beginning of the end of the USA as the world’s superpower.
